Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good tool for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. As in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
